Understanding Open TBI & Blunt TBI: When Invisible Wounds Change Lives

A Story That Could Happen to Anyone

Picture this: You’re 43 years old, supported by a loving family. You regularly play county cricket for one of the English clubs and catch on roughly 50 games a year. In one of your matches, while catching the ball, you fall down on your back and your head hits the ground.

There’s a significant amount of impact, and yet you brush off your hair as if nothing happened and carry on home.

What happens next? The next morning, you find yourself surrounded by family and friends who care for you, trying to understand why you’re finding it difficult to engage and speak to them normally. This is one of the situations faced by many patients with invisible wounds who are fighting hard. Their lives have been turned upside down by an injury that is difficult to pick up outside a hospital and would require specialised brain imaging —a traumatic brain injury.

The Reality of Traumatic Brain Injury(TBI)

There are many such cases worldwide where similar incidents do not lead to complications. In some cases, the effects are not known immediately depending on the degree of impact, or they may cause temporary or short-term effects.

But in other cases? TBIs can lead to severe and permanent disability—and even death.

Two Broad Types of TBI You Should Know

Open TBI: When Skull Is Fractured

Open TBI refers to an incident where an accident or fall has led to small or big objects entering the brain and damaging tissues. This type of injury is often immediately visible and recognized as a medical emergency. The skull is fractured and brain tissue may be exposed or damaged directly.

Blunt TBI: The Silent Threat

Blunt TBI is a typical case where an external force or fall has led to the inner brain walls or the skull to be shaken. Like the case of the individual who fell in a cricket field and the effects showed up the next morning.

Understanding the Signs and Symptoms

What was the missing link in our cricket player’s story? Recognition of warning signs.

Recognising warning signs involves understanding two distinct phases. Immediately after impact, physical red flags like headaches, dizziness, confusion, and fatigue usually appear, though they typically resolve on their own. During the recovery period, the focus often shifts to emotional changes, where symptoms like irritability and frustration tend to develop

Many individuals brush off these symptoms, thinking they’ll pass. But for any individual, it is important to understand that such incidents or head trauma need immediate medical attention or care.

The Critical Importance of Immediate Action

Many physicians today advise patients to get preventive checks done after any head trauma—no matter how minor it seems. A proactive approach could save countless lives and prevent long-term disability.

In today’s healthcare-connected world, where medical technology has advanced significantly, immediate assessment should be the standard response to any head injury.

When Both Types Occur Simultaneously

Here’s something many people don’t realise: Some accidents or trauma can cause both open and blunt TBI at the same time. This combination creates even more complex medical challenges and requires comprehensive emergency care.

A Call for Awareness and Action

What was the missing link? A lack of immediate recognition that head trauma—even without visible injury—requires medical evaluation.

Have you or someone you know experienced a head injury that seemed minor at first? What other ways do you think we can raise awareness about invisible wounds like TBI?
