We’re proud to announce that UpFront Diagnostics, in collaboration with the NIHR Newcastle MIC and Newcastle University, has been named winner of the “Development of an Innovative Device or Technology” category at the Bright Ideas in Health Awards.
The ceremony, held on March 23, 2023, celebrates forward-thinking projects that are transforming health and social care through innovation. Now in its 18th year, the event is supported by key organisations including CPI, AHSN NENC, and the North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board.
Recognised for Transforming Stroke Diagnosis
This recognition highlights the impact and potential of our diagnostic technology, LVOne — the world’s first rapid test to detect GFAP biomarkers using fingerprick blood samples. Designed for pre-hospital stroke diagnosis, LVOne aims to guide better triage decisions and speed up treatment for patients with suspected large vessel occlusion (LVO) strokes.
A Collaborative Innovation
“We’re supporting POCKiT Diagnostics with the development and evaluation of their innovative test that aims to measure biomarkers in the blood and, in combination with clinical information, increase the accuracy of severe stroke diagnosis in an ambulance,”
— Chiko Mutepfa, Methodologist, NIHR Newcastle MIC
The project is being clinically evaluated across four stroke centres in northern England, with support from the Newcastle University Stroke Research Group and health economists at NIHR Newcastle MIC. The study is designed to understand real-world effectiveness and economic impact.
Why It Matters
Every year, over 600,000 people in Europe suffer a stroke, and early detection is critical. Current diagnostic tools are limited outside hospitals, leading to delays in care. LVOne empowers emergency teams to make faster, more accurate decisions — potentially saving lives and improving outcomes.
What’s Next?
Winning this award not only validates our approach, but also provides access to expert support from AHSN NENC, accelerating our journey toward market readiness and real-world implementation.
“Innovation played a critical role during the pandemic. The awards once again highlighted the entrepreneurial spirit in our region,”
— Dr. Nicola Hutchinson, CEO, AHSN NENC
We’re grateful to our partners and the entire clinical innovation community for their collaboration and belief in our mission.
