UpFront Diagnostics, in collaboration with Hospital Menonita Caguas, Inc., is launching a groundbreaking clinical study to evaluate LVOne, its rapid blood test for stroke diagnosis, in Puerto Rico.
The study, titled COPILOT, is a major milestone for stroke care on the island and globally. With IRB approval secured, the trial is set to begin and will run for a minimum of 24 months, assessing the clinical performance of LVOne in patients presenting with suspected stroke.
Addressing a Public Health Emergency in Puerto Rico
Stroke is the leading cause of long-term disability in Puerto Rico and a major cause of mortality. Factors such as high stroke risk, healthcare disparities and limited access to timely treatment contribute to this critical challenge.
Among the most severe types of stroke is Large Vessel Occlusion (LVO) — a condition that requires rapid identification and mechanical thrombectomy for best outcomes. Yet, many patients are not diagnosed in time.
LVOne offers a solution: a finger-prick blood test that can identify key biomarkers (GFAP and D-dimer) and indicate whether a patient is likely experiencing an LVO, before they arrive at the hospital.
“Stroke is a colossal problem, and many patients go untreated simply because we can’t diagnose them in time. This technology will change that.”
— Dr. Rodolfo Alcedo-Guardia, Co-Investigator and Chairman of Neurosurgery, Hospital Menonita
Leading the Way in Stroke Research
“This is important work for Puerto Ricans and the global community. We are proud to drive this disruptive trial forward.”
— Dr. Juan C. Vicenty Padilla, Principal Investigator
“This clinical study could open the door to transforming stroke management globally. We’re thrilled to see LVOne’s impact in real-world clinical settings.”
— Dr. Joshua Bernstock, Chief Medical Director, UpFront Diagnostics
